More than eight million people on the verge of famine in Yemen

The United Nations is urgently calling on all warring sides in Yemen to allow humanitarian aid into the country where more than eight million people are now on the brink of famine.

Last month the Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels tightened a blockade on Yemens ports and airspace, preventing food, fuel and aid from getting into the country.

Overnight, the US Agency for International Development committed an extra $170 million in humanitarian assistance.

The civil war has engulfed Yemen for more than three years.
